How Can I Help? Let Me Count the Ways

Over the last fifty years, I have amassed a considerable variety of experiences and expertise.

That has translated into helping many people and companies achieve their goals.

Lately, it occurs to me
What a long, strange trip it’s been

The Grateful Dead

This article will cover past, present, and future ways I help people.

My educational background includes sciences, literature, philosophy, psychology, video, music, writing, art, marketing, and life in general.

After computer systems training, I work in a large systems integration company starting as a programmer. In five years I progressed to being a Technical Architect and Project Manager on projects.

I also published a branch newsletter, writing about half of the content for each issue.

I also played drums or bass in a number of bands ranging from professional to hobby bands.

Music and Business Connection

Many of my best business projects have come from playing music.

For example, a singer in one of the bands was a Ph.D. candidate in Applied Psychology.

She asked if a could help supervisor compile a BASIC program.

Over the next decades, I ended up being an integral part of an HR Assessment company with my friend from the band.

We went from hand-scoring assessments to scoring with computer programs, to putting an astonishing range of assessments online.

The psychologists designed the assessments, I put them online with a data-intensive system I designed and built.

We generated over ten million dollars in revenue and I got about a million dollars in commissions over that time. The revue sharing idea allowed the company to survive during lean times and everyone benefitted in the good times.

We had binges of development, though much of the time we simply invoiced for usage.

I don’t think I put in more than a thousand hours over twenty years.

I never thought about it until this morning, but that was about a thousand dollars an hour in 1990s dollars. Not too shabby.

That is why I will always listen when someone has an idea that might fly.

Most won’t, but some will!

Video Productions

Early on I wanted to get a video camera to document family stories.

That led to getting more and more professional gear and thousands of hours shooting and producing videos for family stories, food projects, concerts, keynote presentations, live events, and even a few quirky music videos.

Here are some samples from https://www.youtube.com/gregdixon2007:

Today I produce a lot of videos for online courses, interviews, and marketing.

I do a lot of that using StreamYard.

The Greg Dixon Course Vault covers many uses of video in the Course Creation Alchemy Profile, StreamYard Magic Playset, Gold Nugget Video Course, and the Transformation Alchemy Treasure Chest.

All of the courses were sold separately and I plan to another called How To Build and Publish a Life Vault.

Writing, Writing, Writing

If you are human, you are a writer.

As a student ~ especially a Literature student ~ I read a lot and wrote a lot of essays.

Since then I have written millions of words including magazine articles, manuals, songs, survival guides, blog posts, course content, social media posts, video scripts, project plans, proposals, posters, and more.

I have studied copywriting with the American Writers and Artists Institute (AWAI ~ Dan Kennedy recommended), Ray Edwards, Marie Forleo, and Nick Usborne. Dave Dee, Troy Broussard, Ben Settle, Kim Walsh Philips, and Eric Lofholm are influences.

The Kartra Whisperer

Part of my long strange trip is that I signed up for Andy Jenkin’s Video Boss program.

Years later Andy Jenkins was a co-founder of an All-In-One business platform called Kartra.

I often say that ‘Kartra’ evokes some sort of exotic goddess of commerce:-)

The platform aimed to provide membership sites, landing pages, sales campaigns, mailing lists, sales, video, affiliate marketing, and much more.

I was a Beta Tester and found the platform very good at the start.

Kartra constantly gets better and adds new features like Surveys/Quizzes, Help Desks, and Scheduling Calendars to make it capable of supporting very large online companies as well as the solopreneur.

See the Kartra Product Page.

The components work together and there is an astonishing amount of analytics available in the platform to track your success.

Kartra’s Agency mechanism makes it very easy to work with a client’s Kartra account without having their credentials.

Other platforms with some common features include Kajabi, ClickFunnels, High Level, SamCart, Groove, Thrive, New Zenler, Keap (InfusionSoft), and more.

I have used almost all of the features for my own projects and for clients.

There is depth to Kartra that can be overwhelming for business owners and not what they want to spend their time doing.

So they call on me as the Kartra Whisperer.

And I support many of my clients using the features of Kartra, even if they just want stuff to work and do not care about the platform that provides the magic:-)

WordPress and Kartra Hybrid Solutions

Much of my millions of words were published on WordPress sites like this one using the Hemingway theme (you can use any theme as long as it is Hemingway!).

It is fast, clean, has search, and I can use Google Translate on the site.

I can also embed Kartra pages using plugins, allowing me to integrate Kartra features for client sites in WordPress.

The best of both worlds!

Story Productions

Given one of the reasons I was interested in video production was to capture family stories, working with others to create Story Productions was a natural progression.

With Tell Your Story Productions, my wife Bonnie McDonald Dixon and her longtime friend from the Natural Health Industry, Jerry Smith, has created a range of multimedia story productions.

Each Story Production has been a unique collection of multimedia elements such as photos, video, audio, and written stories.

We also travelled in an RV and interviewed pioneers in Natural Health under the banner of the Natural Health Movement.

During the pandemic, we broadcast some of those interviews and conducted live interviews using StreamYard as Health Pioneer Theater.

The Rocket Norton Vault

A current project that uses almost all of my skills and experiences is creating The Rocket Norton Vault.

Rocket Norton is a Vancouver musician, author, impresario, and course creator.

I have worked with Rocket Norton on many projects over the decades, including his How to Coach Baseball to Kids course, his books, driving the stars with his Town Car driving service, and promoting his recent F**K Cancer Concert that raised over $300K. See https://www.fcancerconcert.ca.

The Rocket Norton Vault contains much of his lifetime creative output and we are adding more each week.

See https://www.rocketnorton.com

It is the ultimate Story Production.

How to Build and Publish a Life Vault

The Life Vault is a natural evolution of Story Productions.

One way of looking at a Vault is a secure repository for anything a person, family, or business deems worthy of preserving and sharing.

Building a Life Vault with you is one of the services I offer.

See https://www.gregdixon.net/storyproductions.

I also am launching a book, an online training series, and (surprise surprise:-), a Course Vault with a working title of How to Build and Publish a Life Vault.

One of the topics will be including succession information like wills, representation agreements, power of attorney, and legacy mechanisms in highly protected areas.

At the very least, the instructions on how to find the documents.

I will include various experts in the training modules for How to Build and Publish a Life Vault.

Course Creation

Related to Life Vaults are Online Courses and Memberships.

Many of my clients have an online course or membership (with the main distinction being paying once or paying monthly).

My Course Creation Alchemy Formula is included in The Greg Dixon Course Vault.

See https://www.gregdixon.net/coursevault.

How to Blog to Build Your Business

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

Blogging is one of the best ways to tell customers about your products and generate sales.

Recent trends show that businesses are blogging more than ever and having success.

Here is some information from an American Writers and Artists Institute (AWAI) presentation on blogging trends, including helping people make buying decisions.

Search engines love blog posts and blogging leads to more links to company websites.

What to Blog?

Blog anything that will attract the interest of your clients and provide information to help them choose your products.

Some ideas include:

  • Product Descriptions
  • Case Studies
  • Useful Tips
  • Testimonials
  • Product Comparisons
  • Company Story
  • Company Accomplishments
  • Team Profiles
  • Special Offers
  • Use Case Scenarios
  • Smart Ideas

How Long Should the Posts Be?

According to AWAI, posts longer than 2,000 words are more likely to have strong results.

There are a few reasons for this. For one, more words mean that search engines have more to work with. Chances are better that your post will have the phrases that potential clients are using in their searches.

SEO Tip: Use phrases in your text that people use when searching for products and services like yours.

Greg Dixon, The Blog Whisperer

Another reason is that longer posts are more likely to answer the questions that the person may have about your product.

How Often Should I Post?

Posting at least once a week is a minimum.

Once a day is a good target.

It depends on how much you want to share with your customers and your energy and staffing.

How Can I Share The Posts?

The goal is to reuse and repurpose your posts in many places.

SEO TIP: Use the social media meta tags to control how the Title, Description, and Image appear in searches and social media shares.

Greg Dixon, The Blog Whisperer

Suggested places to post links:

  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Instagram
  • Pinterest
  • Email Newsletters

Practice Makes Perfect

Study posts that you like, especially for your competetors, and emulate the writing and presentation in your posts.

Write and post often. You will naturally get better with practice.

I am available to help with your blogging, from individual posts to a retainer to create regular posts.

What is B2B Copywriting Anyway and Why Would You Want It?

Like any acronym, the meaning of B2B is not immediately obvious.

Sounds like it could be a code word for something in one of the Fifty Shades of Grey books.

Could be, though I am not going to read through the books to find out.

B2B is short hand for Business to Business. Also sometimes written as B-to-B.

B2C is Business-to-Consumer. Sometimes written as B-to-C.

A Business-to-Business company provides products and services for other companies.

A Business-to-Consumer company provides products and services to consumers for personal use.

Business-to-Business Copywriting

Business-to-Business Copywriting can sound a little mysterious and a little intimidating for writers and businesses alike.

It need not be.

Simply put, companies need to tell other companies about their products and services, how they can help their business, and why to choose them over other solutions?

Most businesses use a lot of different ways of doing that, including:

  • Websites
  • Content Marketing Posts
  • Product Brochures
  • Product Manuals
  • Print Advertising
  • Radio Advertising
  • Social Media Content Marketing
  • Webinars
  • Product Overview Videos
  • Product Demonstrations
  • Email Marketing Campaigns
  • Email Newsletters
  • White Papers
  • Review Articles
  • Product Catalogs
  • Podcasts
  • Direct Response Marketing
  • Much more

Opportunities For Writers

The good news is that most successful companies do some or all of the above.

So they need lots of writers.

Chances are that you have worked in a few industries and have experience. Perhaps you sold office equipment, offered accounting services, worked in a salon, or was a specialist in some industry.

That experience is golden for Business-to-Business writers.

You can start in a niche you have experience in or have curiousity about and start there.

In most cases the writing needs to be clear and competent. It does not need to be salesy.

Chances are that potential customers are seeking out information about a product or service and simple need to know more to make a decision.

That is your mission as a copywriter.

The other good news is that there is far more demand for solid copywriters than there are copywriters.

So I suggest adding Business-to-Business copywriting to your list of writing services.

Study business copywriting that you like and model that.

You probably have a lot of competence already. And you can learn the craft from trusted teachers.

The most important thing is gaining experience doing it, starting with small assignments with a company.

Opportunities for Businesses

Chances are that you business could use more Business-to-Business campaigns and writing than you are currently using.

I can help you with many Business-to-Business copywriting projects.

Please contact me to discuss how I can help your business.
